Reduction in rice prices
rice prices have reduced in Sri Lanka as against the trend in the
world market, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said.
Though the World Bank shows that world rice prices rose by 15 percent
since October 2010, the situation in Sri Lanka was different and
specially the prices of Nadu and Sudu Kekulu reduced by six percent in
2010 compared these with 2009, said the Minister participating at the
Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute (HARTI)
Research Conference yesterday at the Institute.
The Minister said that the rice prices in Vietnam increased by 60
percent in the last year and the prices in Indonesia increased by 29
percent in November 2010.
The whole world is talking about a global food crisis. Sri Lanka is
ready to face it.
