Ruling coalition members with highest preferential votes to head Sri Lanka local governments

July 26, Colombo: The Secretary of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) of Sri Lanka Susil Premajayantha has said that the recently elected members to the local government bodies with highest preferential votes would be appointed as the chairmen of the councils.

However, the Secretary said that there may be extraordinary cases in which the member with highest preferential votes would not be appointed as the chairman.

In those cases, the chairman would be appointed with the agreement of the coalition parties of the UPFA, he said.

The process for the appointment of the deputy chairmen also will be the same, the Secretary says.
