Senior Sri Lankan Minister says Darusman Report based on hearsay evidence, not accepted in a court of law

May 05, Colombo: A senior Sri Lankan government minister today said the report by the Panel of Experts appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sri Lanka is based on hearsay evidence.

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva addressing a media briefing in Colombo today said that hearsay evidence is not accepted by any court of law.

He said that the government could easily respond to the allegations leveled by the Panel in its report, but the government would take the appropriate steps at the appropriate time.

De Silva observed that the report itself has stated that the Panel had not embarked upon an investigation procedure into the matter. He said the Panel neither had the authority nor a mechanism to conduct such an investigation.
