Spanish Premier calls on international community to support Sri Lanka

June 18, Colombo: The Prime Minister of Spain Jos Luis Rodrguez Zapatero called on the international community and the United Nations to extend support to Sri Lank in its post-war redevelopment, President’s media unit said.

The Spanish Premier has made these comments when he met with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in St. Petersburg on the sidelines of the 15th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Prime Minister Zapatero has commended Sri Lanka’s efforts to resettle nearly 95 percent of the 300,000 people, displaced by the intensive war against Tamil Tiger terrorists in 2009 in the North and East.

President Rajapaksa has briefed the Spanish PM on the on the reconciliation, resettlement and economic development projects that are currently underway in Sri Lanka, President’s Media Director General, Bandula Jayasekara has told local media..

The President has also appealed to the Spanish investors to start business ventures in Sri Lanka.

On Saturday, the last day of the three-day forum that commenced on June 16, Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa made floral tribute to war monument in Leningrad that honors the efforts of people and soldiers of Leningrad against the invasive Nazi forces.

The President and the Sri Lankan delegation also visited the St. Petersburg war museum as well.
