Apr 18, Dhaka: Following discussions between the visiting Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Bangladesh head of the state, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the two countries have signed five memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on agriculture, education, livestock, information, and commerce cooperation.
Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris has signed the agreements on behalf of Sri Lanka in the presence of the two leaders at the Prime Minister Hasina’s office on Monday.
The MoU for commerce cooperation was signed between the Export Development Board (EDB) of Sri Lanka and the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) of Bangladesh.
Other MoUs are for cultural, education and scientific exchange programmes, for cooperation in fisheries and livestock sector and for vocational education cooperation.
A MoU between Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) and Sri Lanka Council for Agricultural Research Policy (SLCARP) was signed on cooperation in agriculture.
For Bangladesh, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas, Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad and Commerce Minister Faruk Khan have singed the five MoUs, Bangladesh news website bdnews24 reported.
The two leaders discussed the bilateral issues important to their countries as wells as to the region during the meeting. Ministers and foreign secretaries from both governments, and Prime Minister’s principle and press secretaries participated in the meeting.
President Rajapaksa also met with the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dipu Moni. Moni has expressed hope that the President’s visit would further strengthen the bilateral relations between two trusted friends, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan parliamentarians Sajin Vass Gunawardena, A. H. M. Aswar and the Sri Lanka High Commissioner to Dhaka, Sarath Weragoda also participated in the discussions.
