Aug 20, Colombo: The Raids Unit of Sri Lanka Consumer Affairs Authority yesterday raided supermarkets in Colombo and suburbs and found 19 that violated the Consumer Affairs Act.
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) conducted the surprise raid following complaints by the public, Authority Chairman Mr. Rumy Marzook said.
The supermarkets are accused of selling expired items, selling at higher prices than the maximum retail price, selling goods without mentioning the essential data in package, selling goods that lower in weight etc.
The Consumer Affairs Authority has decided to file charges against the management of these supermarkets in the local courts. They will be fined and warned not to repeat.
The raids were conducted under the special instructions of the Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando.
