Sri Lanka Court of Appeal summons Fisheries Minister as a witness

May 04, Colombo: The President of Sri Lanka Court of Appeal, Justice Sathya Hettige has issued summons to the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Rajitha Senarathna to appear in court on May 29 to testify in the hearing of a petition filed in relation to the newly opened Peliyagoda fish trade center.

The summon was issued in relation to a petition seeking the suspension of issuing stalls in the new fish market to persons other than those who were engaged in business in the old fish market at St. John’s Street, Colombo.

The Court of Appeal has also summoned the Secretary of the Ministry and senior officials of the Colombo Municipal Council.

Media reports allege that the Ministry had allocated stalls to persons who were not in business in the old fish market. Some of those who have obtained stalls had never been in the fish trading business, media reports alleged.

Meanwhile, another petition has been filed in the Court of Appeal requesting to allow to continue businesses in the old fish market without hindrance.
