Sri Lanka court orders to rehabilitate 15 disabled ex-combatants

Dec 16, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today ordered to rehabilitate 15 disabled Tamil Tiger suspects who had been arrested immediately after the end of war.

Colombo Magistrate Court Friday ordered the prison authorities to take necessary steps to rehabilitate these former LTTE combatants for a one year period.

The Terrorist Investigation Division had arrested the hardcore LTTE suspects in Vavuniya and produced them before the court. They have been charged of active involvement in terrorist activities.

The police had informed the Court that the Attorney General also had directed the Police to rehabilitate the suspects.

Over 11,600 LTTE combatants surrendered to security forces or were arrested at the end of the humanitarian operation.

The government has released all the ex-fighters following rehabilitation and vocational training except for 700 who are still to undergo training. The authorities expect to release them early next year.
