Sri Lanka Cricket appoints former captain Atapattu as batting coach

Apr 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s cricket authority has appointed former Sri Lanka Captain, Marvan Atapattu as the national team batting coach with immediate effect.

Sri Lanka Cricket said Atapattu, 40, will join a strong coaching team comprising interim coach Stuart Law, Champaka Ramanayaka, and Ruwan Kalpage for the forthcoming tour of England.

Atapattu’s appointment comes a day after the SLC named Tillakaratne Dilshan as captain for the England tour following Kumar Sangakkara’s resignation after Sri Lanka’s defeat to India in the World Cup final.

The England tour to begin on May 22 will include three Tests, five One day Internationals (ODIs) and two T20 matches against England.

Atapattu, who was known as a firm and fair but aggressive captain, has played 90 Tests and 268 ODIs in his 17-year career. He retired from international cricket in 2007.
