Sri Lanka Cricket officially postpones Premier League

July 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka Cricket announced today that it has officially postponed the ‘much looked forward to first edition’ of the Sri Lanka Premier League to 2012 due to insufficient time to arrange the tournament for this year.

Issuing a statement, the SLC said the “attempts to obtain the release of the Indian players were unsuccessful, causing a delay in the naming of the final composition of the SLPL teams which then had an impact on making related arrangements in an effective and timely manner.”

“Therefore, SLC and the SLPL Committee find that there is insufficient time to arrange a tournament of this magnitude this year, within the available window. It has therefore been decided, to postpone the inaugural version of the SLPL by one year,” the SLC said.

“SLC will endeavour to conduct the Sri Lanka Premier League Tournament next year,” it added.

However the SLC has decided to hold the Inter Provincial T 20 tournament this year with 5 provincial teams as it has been played before to enable the winning team to participate in this year’s Champions League T20 tournament.
