May 24, Batticaloa: Members of Sri Lanka’s Eastern Provincial Council today boycotted Council sessions to protest against the arrest of a councilor and the recent search operation on the office and the residence of Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan.
The Army searched Chandrakanthan’s office and residence last week in the course of the investigation into the recent killings that have taken place in the Batticaloa District.
The protesting councilors had also demanded that detained TMVP member and provincial councilor Edwin Silva Krishnanandaraja alias Pradeep Master be presented to the court.
The Police have arrested three persons under suspicion for the recent killing of a coordinating secretary to Deputy Minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman.
According to the councilors the search carried out on Chandrakanthan’s office and residence was illegal as it was done without a court order.
