Sri Lanka elections monitor calls for guidelines on campaign expenditure for candidates

Sept 15, Colombo: An independent election monitoring group in Sri Lanka has called for the introduction of strict guidelines on limits of expenditure during election campaigns.

The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has said that some candidates representing the main political parties seem to be spending about Rs. 1 million every day on their respective election campaigns.

PAFFREL has noted that the newspaper advertisements published in several publications every day would easily cost close to Rs. 1 million for a candidate.

Therefore, PAFFREL has emphasized the need for guidelines on the limits of expenditure for election campaigning.

According to PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi, a mayor could only earn close to Rs. 500,000 during the four year term in office and a Pradehsiya Sabha member would earn only about Rs. 24,000 for the entire term in office.
