Sri Lanka Electricity Board trade unions plan a sudden strike

Aug 14, Colombo: Trade union sources of Sri Lanka power authority, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), say that plans are underway to call a lightning strike on September 7 at 12.00 noon to protest the failure of the government to pay salary arrears for the past 10 months.

The trade unions plan to cover all the grid stations, and other maintenance units countrywide. The employees are to stop work on the said day at the appointed time and they would return for work only the following morning.

A spokesman of the Electricity Board, Ranjan Jayalal, told media that the majority of the trade unions of the Board had expressed their support to the strike.

He said the strike action was postponed since the ongoing Advanced Level examination and the functions like the Kandy Perahera.
