Sri Lanka frees over 350 rehabilitated Tamil Tigers ahead of Deepawali

Oct 25, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government released another batch of rehabilitated Tamil Tiger cadres in to the society at a ceremony held Tuesday at the Ramakrishna Hall in Wellawatte in Colombo under the patronage of Sri Lankan Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne.

Around 370 former LTTE cadres who have undergone the rehabilitation program were released Tuesday ahead of the Hindu festival of Deepawali.

The former combatants receive training in vocational skills before their release through the programs organized by Sri Lanka military to earn a living on their own once released.

The Prime Minister handed over the rehabilitated cadres to their parents and family members at the ceremony.
The Rehabilitation Authority provides the released cadres with a concessionary loan of 275,000 rupees as a starter for a self-employment.
