Sri Lanka government to establish religious schools in prisons

May12, Colombo: Sri Lankan Minister of Rehabilitation and Prisons Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera has directed officials to set up religious schools in all prisons island wide, Ministry sources said.

Accordingly, Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and Islam religious schools will be established in 33 prisons and correction centers for young offenders in Sri Lanka, says the Secretary of the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prisons Reforms A. Dissanayake.

The official said that the aim of the programme that is in line with the President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Mahinda Chinthana manifesto is to provide an opportunity to the prison inmates to have an education on their respective religions.

The prisoners are expected to use the education they received through the prison to have successful life when they are released from prison.
