Sri Lanka government to open Kankasanthurai cement factory next year

Oct 07, Colombo: State Resources and Investment Promotions Minister Dayasritha Tissera says that Kankasanthurai cement factory in the Northern Province will be re-opened soon after the current renovation work is completed.

The factory ceased operations in 1990 when the war between the security forces and the Tamil Tiger terrorists intensified.

The government was in the search for investors to restart the factory.

The Minister said the cement factory would be started as a government venture with an investment of Rs. five to seven million.

A small plant with production capacity of 250 to 300 tonnes will be initially installed in the factory and packaging of imported cement will also be started, says the Minister.

The factory is to create a large number of employment opportunities for the people in Sri Lanka’s war-torn North.
