Oct 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka has imposed heavy import taxes on green gram to save local farmer, says the Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
Accordingly, effective Monday, state levies Rs. 30 per kilo of imported green gram, the Minister said addressing a harvesting ceremony held in Hambanthota district yesterday.
Further, the government has imposed 90% tax on imports of phaseolus max or ‘undu’, 76% on cow pea, and 30% on ragi (millet).
The Minister said that Sri Lanka imported 14,000 metric tons of green grams annually.
