Sri Lanka, India joint naval exercise begins tomorrow

Sept 18, Colombo: The navies of Sri Lanka and India will conduct a joint naval exercise beginning from Monday in the sea off Trincomalee in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province, the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) announced today.

The joint exercise code-named “SLINEX II” from 19th to 24th September 2011 is aimed at enhancing interoperability of the two navies, according to the SLN.

Two Offshore Patrol Vessels, one Fast Missile Vessel, two Fast Gun Boats and six Fast Attack Crafts from SLN and one Destroyer, one Frigate, one Missile Corvette, one Landing Ship Tank and two Fast Attack Craft along with one Maritime Patrol Aircraft from Indian Navy will participate in the exercise.

According to SLN, the drill is expected to provide the opportunity for the neighboring navies to rehearse the concept of joint naval operations and enhance own skills in order to gain from each other’s experience.
