Feb 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) yesterday protested against the increase in fuel prices and the rising cost of living while riding in the Hamilton Canal that runs from Colombo to Negombo along the western coast.
Several UNP protestors including UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena, National Organizer Daya Gamage and Democratic People’s Front (DPF) Leader Mano Ganesan participated in the protest yesterday afternoon by traveling along the Hamilton canal through Wattala in diesel boats with black flags.
The boats traveled up to Negombo and the opposition protestors waved black flags and shouted anti-government slogans along the canal.
The UNP said that it would rally the people and continue with street protests demanding relief for the people.
The UNP also held a massive protest in Fort yesterday evening, which came under tear gas attack by the police.
