Sri Lanka major opposition party’s international secretary to be appointed as a national list MP

May 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s major opposition United National Party (UNP) internal sources say that the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe intends to appoint party’s international secretary Sagala Ratnayake to parliament through the national list.

Ratnayake contested for Matara district at the 2010 April election but failed to be elected. Only two UNP parliamentarians, Mangala Samaraweera and Buddhika Pathirana were elected from the district. Sagala Ratnayake placed third in the list of preferential votes.

Although Ratnayake was appointed as the party international secretary, lack of a diplomatic passport was reportedly a hindrance to his work.

UNP sources say that a present national list MP is to resign soon and the vacancy is to be filled by Ratnayake.
