July 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has informed Elections Commissioner (EC) Mahinda Deshapriya that party members involved in election related activities have been harassed and inconvenienced by the security forces in the North.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva has told Deshapriya during a meeting between the Elections Commissioner and political party secretaries that the security forces were not aware of the election regulations.
The Elections Commissioner has said that measures would be taken to make the security forces aware of the election regulations.
The JVP had also requested the Commissioner to make the necessary arrangements to ensure that persons still living in the displaced camps are provided with facilities to cast their votes.
The postal voting for 63 local government bodies will be held on July 12. The polls will be held on July 23.
