Sri Lanka Marxist party protests against government’s budget

Dec 14, Colombo: Sri Lanka Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) staged a protest march in Colombo on Wednesday (14) to protest against the government’s “failed” budget and the rising costs of living.

Thousands of protestors carrying placards and shouting slogans marched from Campbell Park in Borella and proceeded to the Lipton Circus in Colombo this afternoon.

JVP Propaganda Secretary and parliamentarian Vijitha Herath has said the party has already held a series of protests in several key towns in the country and today’s protest is also part of the campaign against the government’s failure to provide relief to the masses and its undemocratic rule.

JVP activists wearing masks of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa were seen marching during the protest

Some of the placards called for the immediate closure of private universities, the government has established to provide educational opportunities to students who failed to get admission to public universities.

The protest was also expected to be a show of the JVP’s strength following the recent crisis in the party that led to a massive split, party sources said.
