June 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has said that it would support a proper pension scheme for the private sector if the government presents one.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a press conference that the party, which was behind the continuing protests, was not ready to support the pension scheme that was proposed by the government as it was not in the best interest of the private sector workers.
However, he said the party was ready to support a new piece of legislation that would be beneficial to the workers.
He added that the government after claiming to be strong was defeated by the people’s power.
Silva further observed that the JVP, which the government claimed to have been defeated in the past few months, has become the main opponent of the government.
The government has blamed the JVP for instigating violence for their political gains and leading to the death of a free trade zone employee.
