Sri Lanka Marxist party rebels to hold a congress

Sept 26, Colombo: A spokesman for the rebel faction of Sri Lanka’s Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has said that they had asked the present leadership to resign and hand over the party to a younger generation, the state owned Dinamina newspaper reported.

The rebels led by Premakumar Gunarathnam, pointing out that under the leadership of old leaders like Somawansa Amarasinghe and Tilvin Silva, the party has decayed in all senses, have urged them to resign.

Gunarathnam faction that claims they have the support of the majority of the party central committee says they will hold a party congress and appoint a new leadership unless the leaders give way to change.

Earlier, the rebels were reportedly trying to form a new party but now the sources say that they have become more powerful than the present leadership gaining support from the party grassroots level.
