Sri Lanka Met Department warns fishermen to stay away from sea, Navy searches for missing fishermen

Nov 26, Colombo: The Meteorology Department of Sri Lanka today said a low pressure condition has been developed in the lower atmosphere of the island that would bring heavy intermittent thunder showers and gale force winds today and asked the fishermen to refrain from going to sea for fishing.

Meteorology Department Duty Forecaster P G Yasaratne has told the state radio SLBC that as a result of the low pressure system the western seas will be rough and intermittent thunder showers are in the forecast for western part of the country while the South will experience diminishing winds.

However, the meteorologist has said that heavy rain is expected in the northeastern as well as in the southern provinces.

According to the official, the disturbance developed over Sri Lanka is moving away in the westerly direction.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Navy has launched search operations to find the fishermen missing since yesterday. Thirty fishermen in Matara district who were fishing at the time of the storm are reportedly missing.
