Sri Lanka Minister to shave head as an offering to Buddha

May 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka will shave his head tomorrow ceremoniously as a principle offering for the 2600th Sambudda Jayanthi that marks the Buddha’s enlightenment.

The Minister who represents the Sinhala Buddhist nationalist party Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) will also observe ten Buddhist percepts (Dasa Sil).

The programme of shaving head will take place at Sadaham Sevana temple in Rajagiriya, a suburb of Colombo, tomorrow at 8 am.

Western Provincial Council Minister Udaya Gammanpila, JHU national Organizer Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe and a large number of JHU members will also ceremoniously shave their heads tomorrow.

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa will officially declare the 2600th Sambuddha Jayanthi and the Wesak Week at a ceremony to be held in front of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura on the 14th of this month.
