Sri Lanka MP Duminda Silva says his men came to streets with clubs for decorations

June 09, Colombo: Ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Colombo district parliamentarian Duminda Silva said that a group of his supporters came to the streets with clubs on June 02 to make decorations with flags.

He has made this comment as he led a counter protest against the major opposition United National Party (UNP) protest held in Maradana, Sinhala daily Lankadeepa reported.

A large number of supporters of MP Silva participated in the counter protest held today in front of the Colombo Fort Railway Station.

Sri Lanka media reported with photo evidence on June 02 that a large crowd with clubs in their hands gathered near the Town Hall when the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) held a protest.

However, no scuffle took place or no one was harmed by the club-wielding people.

Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said that there was no law to arrest the persons that have clubs in their hands. He said clubs could be used to chase stray dogs.
