Sri Lanka Navy accused of pelting stones at TN fishermen

Nov 06, Kachchatheevu: Fishermen from India’s Tamil Nadu state have accused the Sri Lankan Navy of pelting stones at them when they were fishing near the Kachchatheevu islet today.

According to Indian media reports six fishermen have been injured and 10 boats were damaged when Sri Lankan naval personnel allegedly pelted stones at them.

The reports quoting Fisheries department officials said one of the fishermen suffered multiple injuries when broken window glass panes of the boat struck him.

They have also accused the Sri Lankan Naval personnel of cutting their fishing nets.

Kachchatheevu islet belongs to Sri Lanka.

The Tamil Nadu fishermen have alleged on several occasions earlier that the Sri Lankan naval personnel have attacked them when they were fishing in their waters.

However, the Sri Lankan Navy denies any attacks by its personnel on Indian fishermen.

A recent report of a Sri Lankan Navy ship ramming an Indian fishing boat and sinking it last month later proved to be a false claim by the fishermen.

Indian media say this kind of false information may have been spread by Tamil nationalists, who on one hand are trying to defame the Lankan Navy and on the other, publicly defending Rajiv Gandhi’s assassins.
