Sri Lanka opposition leader accused of delaying the appointment of a UNP National Organizer

Apr 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) seniors accuse party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe of delaying the appointment of the party’s National Organizer.

UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa says that the National Organizer post is the only one remaining while appointments to all other posts have been completed. He blamed Wickremasinghe for the delay.

Premadasa made this comments during an event organized by the UNP Lawyers’ Association to welcome the party’s new deputy leader.

The advisory committee of the UNP met last Wednesday but failed to reach an agreement with regard to the appointment of the party’s National Organizer.

Wickremasinghe had proposed UNP Colombo District parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake’s name to the post of National Organizer but Deputy Leader Premadasa had vehemently opposed Wickremasinghe’s proposal ending the meeting without an agreement on the post.

UNP MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara’s name has been proposed for the post at the Working Committee meeting held on March 28.

Wickremasinghe however, has said the appointment to the post should be discussed by the Advisory Council, although no other names have been nominated to the post.

Premadasa said that the new Working Committee would be finalized on May 3.
