Sri Lanka opposition party complains about police promotions

Oct 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s main opposition part the United National Party (UNP) has written to the Elections Commissioner complaining about transfers and promotions granted to police officers in areas where elections are to be held on Saturday (8th October 2011).

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has called on Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to suspend transfers and promotions of police officers during the period of the elections.

Attanayake has said that the UNP has learnt that two police officers, one each in Anuradhapura and Kandy, had been granted promotions in violation of election laws.

According to election laws, it is illegal to transfer or promote public servants after elections have been declared.
