Sri Lanka opposition party expels crossed over former MP from Working Committee

Sept 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s major opposition United National Party (UNP) has taken a decision to expel a member crossed over to the ruling party from the UNP Working Committee.

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has taken the decision to remove Former UNP MP Mohammed Maharoof form the party’s working committee today.

Wickremasinghe has informed Maharoof, in writing that he is no longer a member of the UNP Working Committee with effect from today.

The former Central Colombo electoral organizer of UNP joined the ruling party’s major constituent Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and received membership of the party from the President Mahinda Rajapaksa last month.

Maharoof, is contesting the upcoming local government election on the UPFA ticket.
