July 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa will lead a parliamentary delegation to participate in the 5th Summit Conference of Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians in New Delhi.
The four-day conference of lawmakers from eight SAARC member countries opens Saturday (9) evening under the patronage of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Indian parliament’s Central Hall in New Delhi.
The Sri Lankan delegation headed by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa comprises Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, parliamentarians Tharanath Basnayaka, Fizal Kaseem, Mangala Samaraweera, and Sunil Handunnetti.
The themes for discussions at the conference include ‘Consolidating Democracy, Strengthening trust between Parliament and People, and Sustainable Development in SAARC Countries – The Way Forward’.
Nearly 130 delegates, observers, and officials from the eight SAARC countries will attend the conference organized by India’s Lok Sabha Secretariat. The summit that will be held at the Hotel Taj Mahal is to conclude on the July 12th.
The Conference was held in Colombo in 2006.
