Apr 29, Colombo: Political parties in Sri Lanka have made preparations to hold May Day celebrations on Sunday with processions and rallies.
The governing United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is to hold its May Day rally at the Colombo Municipal grounds under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa following a procession from Campbell Park.
All coalition parties of the UPFA are to participate in the May Day ceremony to protest against the report by the panel of experts appointed by the United Nations Secretary General on Sri Lanka.
The May Day rally of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) has been organized in Bandarawela under the patronage of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
The Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) demonstration is to hold its rally at the BRC grounds following a procession from the S. de S. Jayasinghe ground in Dehiwala.
Sri Lanka’s Labor Ministry meanwhile has said that it will not grant an additional public holiday on Monday (2) in lieu of May Day falling on a Sunday.
