Sri Lanka President directs minister to supply cold storage facilities to economic centers

Apr 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed the Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando to provide cold storage facilities to the economic centers island wide.

The President has made this move as massive wastage of vegetables was reported from several economic centers due to the oversupply.

The President also directed the Minister to visit the areas and address the grievances of the affected farmers.

The farmers had to face difficulties in selling their stocks of vegetables during the New Year holidays since the traders have kept their stalls closed. This caused the vegetable stocks to rot and to be discarded, sources said.

Around 70,000 kilos of vegetables were discarded in Dambulla economic center alone yesterday as they could not be sold.
