Sept 19, Colombo: President Mahinda Rajapaksa has left for New York this morning to attend the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Sri Lanakn Government Media Unit said.
The President is scheduled to deliver his address in the UN General Assembly on the 23rd September.
President Rajapaksa’s delegation to UN includes External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris.
The government reported that the President is also scheduled to meet the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the Assembly. This is the first time he will be meeting the UN Secretary General after the release of the Expert Panel report.
The President is expected to express Sri Lanka’s concerns over the release of the Expert Panel report by the UNSG to the Human Rights Council without giving adequate notice to Sri Lanka.
The President is also expected to meet several heads of states and hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
