Sri Lanka President tells country’s young to be morally responsible

July 05, Kandy, Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa Tuesday asked the country’s children to be not only intellectual, but also to be morally responsible towards the society and patriotic.

The President, as the chief guest at the 2010 annual prize giving ceremony of the Kandy Dharmaraja Vidyalaya said the students should be geared to accept the future of the country.

In response to a question raised by a student as to what message he has to give the children, the President said the students should strive not only for education but also to uphold moral values.

Student should also get involved in sports and performing arts to become all-round citizens, the President pointed out.

The President also said the teachers have the great responsibility of creating a well-behaved society by molding the children as they spent more time with the teachers than with the parents.


Student Laksara Gunawardena of was awarded the gold medal for the best student in overall performances.

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena, Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayaka, Deputy Minister Lalith Dissanayake, Parliamentarian Eric Prasanna Weerawardena and College Principal S.M. Keerthiratne were among others who participated in the occasion.
