Sri Lanka Railways employees warn of strike

Feb 19, Colombo: All Sri Lanka Railway Employees’ General Trade Union linked to the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) threatens to launch a strike during the upcoming New Year season unless the government grants the solutions to their demands before March 25.

The chairman of the union Sumathipala Manawadu said that the railway authorities have created many anomalies among the employees’ services of the Railway Department.

The union says that the authorities have failed to comply with the written pledges granted to various trades of the Department.

He also said that promotions are not given in certain trades for 15 years and there were casual and substitute employees that had not been made permanent after a lengthy service.

The union warned that all trades of the Railway Department would be summoned to the strike.
