Sri Lanka releases over 850 prisoners to mark Vesak Day

May 17, Colombo: The Sri Lankan prison authorities today released 858 prisoners serving time for minor offences to mark the Vesak Poya Day.

The prisoners who have received a presidential pardon had been handed over to their families after observing religious customs, the Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry has said

The President had pardoned 13 women and 845 men held at 29 prison centers throughout the country to commemorate the 2600th Sambuddathwa Jayanthi which marks the anniversary of Buddha’s Enlightenment.

Meanwhile, local media reported that the major opposition United National Party (UNP) has requested the President to pardon Sri Lanka’s most famous prisoner, former Army commander Sarath Fonseka who is serving a 30-month sentence after he was found guilty of wrongdoing while in the army by a court martial.
