Sri Lanka ruling party holds massive May Day celebration protesting against "Darusman report"

May 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s ruling party United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) today held a massive procession and rally to celebrate May Day and to protest against the report by the Panel of Experts appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sri Lanka.

A large number of processions from various parts of the city converged to the Colombo Municipal Council grounds (Town Hall) where the main rally was held under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The main procession commenced from Campbell Park in Borella.

President Rajapaksa and parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa also participated in the procession while crowds by either side of the road thronged towards the President cheering him.

Participants in the government’s May Day rally carried placards protesting against the UN report, called by the government as “Darusman report”, and shouted slogans against the UN Secretary-General, his Panel of Experts and the imperialist members of the international community.

Leaders of the parties affiliated to the UPFA addressing the massive crowds in the Town Hall grounds and the roads condemned the “Darusman report” and called on the citizens of the country to oppose the UN’s move in unity.

Sri Lanka rejected the UN Panel report saying that it is ‘fundamentally flawed in many respects’ and divisive.
