Sri Lanka Supreme Court releases two persons that were in remand for three years without charges

June 28, Colombo: Supreme Court of Sri Lanka expressed concern today regarding a case where two persons were kept remanded for three years without framing charges for smoking a cigar of cannabis.

The Supreme Court considering a petition filed by the two persons arrested by Minuwangoda police in 2008, ordered the two remand prisoners released on personal bail.

The petitioners cited that they were produced in Minuwangoda magistrate court for 59 times.

The suspects were not represented by lawyers and they had not asked for bail since they had no money. The Government Analyst’s report too on the evidence seized from the suspects had not still been received by court.
