Sri Lanka Tamil party leaders meet visiting US officials

Feb 13, Colombo: The visiting top level United States officials Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert O. Blake and State Department’s Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Maria Otero have met members from Sri Lanka’s major Tamil political party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).

TNA Leader R. Sampanthan has said the discussion held on Sunday (12) with the US officials was cordial and constructive.

He has said the two parties discussed and exchanged ideas and that a whole gamut of issues was discussed during the meeting.

However, the TNA leader has not elaborated further.

The External Affairs Ministry states that the two US officials would meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa and External Affairs Minster Prof. G.L. Peiris today before concluding their visit this evening.

Meanwhile, the country’s Economic Development Minister and President’s brother basil Rajapaksa has said that the TNA would not gain anything without holding talks with the government.

He has said in an interview with a Tamil daily that the President is of the opinion that all parties should be encompassed in the talks.
