May01, Colombo: Sri Lanka is to implement a program to computerize the relevant information of prisoners currently serving time in Sri Lankan jails.
Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms will implement a program to computerize all the data of the detainees in the island wide prisons.
Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms, Chandrasiri Gajadeera, has said that the Ministry is to commence the pilot project on this scheme from the Welikada Prison with the assistance of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Sri Lanka national news agency, Lankapuwath said.
Accordingly, information on the prisoners who are serving prison sentences have been entered into a database.
The project will facilitate the communication between law enforcement agencies in the country and arresting criminals without a delay.
The Ministry is in the process of collecting information on prisoners’ individual performances, the arrest dates, the details of crimes they committed and the date they would be released for reference, the Minister has said. These data will be computerized shortly, he has added.
