Sri Lanka to conduct census of industries

Mar 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Industry and Commerce has decided to hold a census of industries in 2013.

Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiyutheen says that the State owned industrial establishments, industries coming within the purview of Board of Investment (BOI) and private sector establishments with 5 or more persons engaged, will be counted at this census.

The Department of Census Statistics (DCS) usually conducts Census of Industry once in ten years in order to have a full coverage of Industrial Establishments within the territorial boundary of Sri Lanka.

Minister Bathiyutheen has pointed out that the state income from industries increased immensely last year and earning US$ 10.5 billion from industrial exports. He also said that it was an increase of 22% compared to the previous year.

The Minister highlighted that the policies of the Mahinda Chintanaya manifesto of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa contributed to the development in the industrial sector.
