Sri Lanka to implement import restrictions on fruit

The Ministry of Agriculture in Sri Lanka says that the government is to impose import restrictions on five types of fruit: papaya, mango, pineapple, grapes and orange.

The government says that Sri Lanka can grow their fruits domestically and there will be a programme implemented to encourage cultivation.

Ministry sources say that Sri Lanka imported 478,177 kilos of grapes, 2,144,067 kilos of apple and 4,938,285 kilos of orange in November last year alone.

The government says that Sri Lanka can be agriculturally self sufficient and should not be looking towards excessive importing.
