Sri Lanka to set up an authority to administer local councils in Colombo district

Aug 21, Colombo: The Sri Lankan Cabinet has already approved establishing an authority to administer five local councils including three municipalities in the Colombo district, Economic Development Minister of Sri Lanka Basil Rajapaksa said.

The necessary legislation to set up the authority has already been drafted, the Minister has said.

The proposed authority is to administer the Colombo, Kotte and Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia municipal councils, the Kolonnawa Urban Council and the Kotikawatte-Mulleriywa Pradeshiya Sabha.

He has explained that the proposed authority would be similar to the Urban Development Authority (UDA) and would help expedite development activities in the metropolis.

Rajapaksa has added that the authority would not pose any obstacle to the local council members to carry out their duties.
