Sri Lanka Trade unions ask factory owners to grant leave to workers to attend FTZ employee’s funeral

June 03, Colombo: Trade unions in Sri Lanka ask factory owners to grant leave to their workers tomorrow to attend the funeral of the Katunayake free trade zone (FTZ) employee killed during the clash between the police and the workers.

Head of the Inter Company Employees’ Union (ICEU), Wasantha Samarasinghe told a press conference that workers in the FTZ have to be given leave tomorrow to attend the funeral of 21-year-old Roshen Chanaka who was killed due to the gunshot injuries sustained by him during the clash on Monday (May 30).

Samarasinghe said that Roshen had sacrificed his life for the cause of defeating the government’s proposed pension scheme to the private sector.

However, he said that regardless of being granted leave or not, a large number of workers from the FTZ would attend the funeral.

According to Samarasinghe, the government was directly responsible for Roshen’s death.
