Sri Lanka Transport Board not to raise bus fares, plans to add more buses

Apr 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Transport Kumar Welgama says the state bus service, Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), will not raise bus fares even though the fuel prices have gone up.

The Minister made this remark as the private bus owners are seeking a bus fare hike.

The Minister says that the SLTB is also taking measures to increase its bus fleet to 7,500 from 5,000 at present.

The SLTB has planned to purchase 500 buses from Ashok Leyland on a lease arrangement. The Ministry has also planned to buy 250 buses from its funds for the SLTB.

Another 100 new luxury buses that were imported from India were given to the depots yesterday. SLTB is also repairing the buses that were in garages due to lack of spare parts and repair costs.
