Sri Lanka university students group to file petition in SC against leadership training programme

May 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) is to file a petition before the Supreme Court today against the leadership training programmes at military camps to be introduced to new entrants to universities from Monday (23).

The Higher Education Ministry has announced that all new entrants to universities would have to attend a newly formulated leadership training programme that would be conducted at military camps.

All 20,000 students of the new batch are to be trained under the three-week programme at 28 centers run by the Defense Ministry.

The IUSF expressed its opposition to the programme when it was first announced several weeks back.

IUSF Convener Sanjeewa Bandara expressed doubts over the government’s move and claimed neither the Higher Education Ministry nor the University Grants Commission (UGC) could make arbitrary decisions without discussing with students and parents.

He said the university students needed good training programmes in English and IT.

The Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake said the programme is not a military training although it is held in military camps.
