Sri Lankan court warns assaulted female legislator

Mar 31, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court has today warned actress turned government parliamentarian Upeksha Swarnamalee also known as Pabha for releasing infroamtion to media.

Gangodawila Magistrate Anura Kumara Herath has today asked Swarnamalee not to make any statements to the media about the ongoing court case or the court proceedings.

Lawyers representing Swarnamalee’s husband, Mahesh Chaminda Walawegama, had informed the court that the parliamentarian was giving false information to the media about the court proceedings.

The case involves an incident where Swarnamalee was allegedly assaulted by her husband sustaining severe facial injuries. She was admitted to hospital by her security staff on February 14 with bruises on her face and later she underwent cosmetic surgery.

Swarnamalee lodged a police complaint and her husband surrendered to the police later.

The Magistrate had also granted permission to Swarnamali’s husband to visit her house with the police to collect documents and other belongings.

MP Swarnamalee was elected to the parliament from Gampaha district under the opposition United National Party ticket. She later expressed support to the government at the 18th amendment to the constitution and crossed over to the ruling party.
