Sri Lankan cricket fans to rally around to get resigned captain back

Apr 08, Colombo: Sri Lankan cricket fans saddened by the resignation of their beloved cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara following the defeat to India in the World Cup final are to rally around to get him to lead the national team again.

Cricket fans in large numbers are to gather at the Independence Square tomorrow (09) at 3:00 p.m. to peacefully demonstrate to get Kumar Sangakkara back to the captaincy and Mahela Jayawardena to vice captaincy.

Over 5,000 fans have confirmed their participation for the campaign to call the two players back, Sri Lanka’s National News Agency reported.

The event has been organized through the social network site Facebook. The organizers have requested the fans to come in Sri Lankan cricket t-shirts, Blue or yellow t shirts with banners, flags, etc in support of the two players.

Following the defeat to India at the 2011 ICC World Cup Final Sangakkara and Jayawardena tendered their resignations. The team selectors followed the suit and resigned yesterday.

Cricket fans and media reports have accused the selectors and the Sri Lanka Cricket board of influencing the team to concede the victory to India in return of monetary gains.

The selectors ‘decision to play bowler Suraj Randiv in place of injured Angelo Mathews and complete elimination of fast-bowler Ajantha Mendis who is ranked at 8th place in the ICC bowlers list from the final match have baffled the observers and fans alike.

The selectors or the SLC board has not offered any explanations to the charges yet.
